Bequia
|
Team Bequia is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bequia, which boasts of a membership of 14 STRONG. This isn’t your average Rotary Club. Since their inauguration in 1988, they have made a major impact on the quality of life on Bequia. Rotary is now a household name in Bequia. Among their achievements have been installation of wells and pumps in Port Elizabeth, Lower Bay and Paget Farm. As with most Rotary Clubs, they have assisted many sick and needy residents who must travel abroad for medical services which can’t be obtained locally. They have given in excess of $150,000 to the Bequia Hospital. In 1991 they set up a Computer Resource Center which has introduced school teachers, bank clerks, unemployed school leavers, business people, hotel workers and many others to the world of computers. They have started an Interact Club for school children and taken to the streets in efforts to increase Drug Awareness in the Community. Their most ambitious project has been to acquire and restore the abandoned Lower Bay School and convert it into a Vocational School for literacy and skills training programmes. Many of these programmes are taught by Rotarians. This not a group with deep pockets either. Most of their success has been the fact that they go out and do the work themselves. In order to raise funds they, in the words of Charter President Chester Peters, have become experts in the art of matching grants. In many cases, 100% of the their funding comes from Clubs from overseas. This is truly a Club which demonstrates what Rotary is all about. |
